How to do I find the SMART Recovery web site from the message board?

There are two ways you can get to the SMART Recovery web site.
  1. Click on menu button "Main Site" on the top left of the page.
  2. Click on the link on the bottom of every page that says "SMART Recovery Home Page"

What are the different volunteer roles in SROL?

We have four volunteer positions which can be applied for:
  • Meeting Facilitator: this is the person who runs the meeting
  • Meeting Helper: shares links and keeps an eye on chat
  • Message Board Volunteer: reads the discussion forums, responds to posts, organize threads into the appropriate forums, and keeps the conversation productive
  • Chat Volunteers: greet people in chat, responds to conversations, keeps the conversation productive
These are other positions for experienced volunteers:
  • Moderators: there are moderators for discussion forums and chat, they edit or delete posts and help address any issues
  • Liaison Team: members from each volunteer group, process volunteer applications, training, help address any issues

How do I become a volunteer?

There are some steps to become a volunteer. First, one must be registered for SROL and active in the community for at least three months. During this time, we hope our future volunteers would get involved in meetings, post in the forums, or greet people in 24/7 chat. This will give the time to get familiar with the different platforms of SROL and our volunteers/ participants.

In addition, Facilitators and Meeting Helpers must both have completed one of the required trainings before volunteering. Message Board and Chat volunteers have three months to complete the training after starting volunteering. The required training options are:
  • GSF 201: Facilitator Training
  • GSF 203: Facilitator/ Family & Friends Combination Course
  • GSF 301: Professional Training
Finally, we have a 6-month ABSTINENCE POLICY, when applicable.

How do I respond to someone who is suicidal or expressing thoughts of self-harm?

Remember: We are not professionals here.

What You Can Do

1. Take the person's threat seriously.
2. BE DIRECT--talk openly.
3. Let the person know you care.
4. Urge the person to get professional help; refer them to a local crisis line, the emergency room of a local hospital, or their own counselor if they have one.

"You are telling us that you feel suicidal. I am concerned for you. You have several options. If your feelings are intense and urgent, then it might be better to seek professional help immediately.
If you are not sure where to go, an emergency room would be a good option. Or you could stay in the meeting or in chat, and seek help afterward. It's up to you. However, in this meeting or chat we don't discuss suicide, just addictive behavior. Perhaps you would like to discuss your addictive behavior. What happens if I am moderated or banned?

When a member is moderated their ability to post in real time is removed. Their posts go into a moderation queue and then are reviewed by the moderators before they are allowed to post, providing they are recovery related. They would no longer be able to access the chat system, send private messages, post visitor messages, or create new Journal entries.

When a participant is banned, they may no longer have access to the meetings, discussion forums, and 24/7 chat. Bans can range from one month to lifetime, depending on the nature of the infraction.

After the moderation or ban period is up the member can apply for reinstatement** by using the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page then "General Technical Support".

** In some cases a participant under lifetime ban will be allowed to return. This is rare and is handled on a case by case basis.
